WHY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE IS ESSENTIAL

In our years of service, we’ve encountered numerous misconceptions about generator maintenance. It's crucial to debunk these myths to ensure your generator remains in optimal condition.

Fact Vs. Fiction

Fiction: Generators don’t require maintenance.

Fact: All generators require maintenance, similar to your heating & AC systems, car, pool, or any other mechanical equipment.

Fiction: All that needs to be done is an oil change every year.

Fact: Proper maintenance involves more than just changing the oil and filter.

Fiction: We don’t get many outages; my generator doesn’t get that much use. So, I don’t need yearly maintenance.

Fact: It’s just as important to maintain a unit that doesn’t get many hours as it is for one that gets a lot of use.

Fiction: My installer said they installed an engine starting battery with a 6-year warranty, so I am good for 6 years.

Fact: The battery life expectancy in a generator is about 3 years, not 6. Critical facilities like hospitals and 911 centers change their batteries every 2 years.

Fiction: My unit has a 5-year warranty or I purchased an extended warranty, so I’m covered and don’t need to do anything.

Fact: The warranty doesn’t cover preventive maintenance and requires the generator to be properly maintained. We offer several extended warranty & maintenance packages to keep your generator worry-free without additional costs for up to 5 years (for new units only).

Fiction: I have a liquid-cooled generator with 5-year or “permanent” anti-freeze/coolant, so I’m good.

Fact: Most units come with regular anti-freeze/coolant, which should be checked regularly and often needs system flushing per the manufacturer's recommendations. Anti-freeze/coolant degrades over time and can become corrosive. This is a widely overlooked area of maintenance for liquid-cooled generators. If your unit is over 3 years old, consult your owner’s manual for the manufacturer's recommendations or ask your generator service provider.

If you’re unsure about your generator’s maintenance requirements, feel free to call us. Our team is here to help you keep your generator running reliably, ensuring you're never left in the dark during an outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can’t I just wait until my generator breaks down to have it serviced?

While this may seem like a cost-effective approach, it can actually end up costing you more in the long run. By neglecting preventative maintenance, you risk major breakdowns and costly repairs. Regularly scheduled generator maintenance can help catch issues early on and save you from unexpected expenses.

  • How often should I schedule generator maintenance services?

We generally recommend scheduling preventative maintenance services annually. However, depending on the size and usage of your generator, more frequent maintenance may be necessary. Our team of experts can assess your specific needs and recommend a maintenance schedule that works best for you.

  • What do your preventative maintenance contracts include?

Our generator maintenance services cover all aspects of your generator, including battery testing and replacement, safety inspections, monitoring, and fuel system maintenance. We also provide detailed reports and recommendations for any necessary repairs or replacements.

  • How often should I run my generator for maintenance?

It’s important to run your generator regularly, even if it’s not being used for emergency power. We recommend running the generator at least once a month for 20 minutes to ensure all components are functioning properly and prevent any build-up of moisture or debris.
